a live performance
by recording artist
PAUL MANCHIN
"...The
Canadian pop-star-in-waiting has been effectively mining a sound that lands
somewhere between mainstream belter George Michael and club veteran Robert
Owens. With his latest self-made disc, "Natural," he delivers his most assured,
fully realized recording to date."
- Review by Larry Flick in Billboard
1/13/2001
Report: Kurfew's Gay and Lesbian Expo 2001 afterparty on March 17th was a major success. We noticed lots of cute new faces both from within New York City and out of town. Recording artist Paul Manchin, of Toronto, performed his catchy hit "Orange" right on the dance floor among the Kurfew boys and girls.
The Expo itself was bigger than ever. Kurfew was a Platinum Sponsor this year of the expo (held at the Jacob Javits Center), along with WKTU, Next Magazine and other gay-owned or gay-supportive companies. The Kurfew Krew coordinated all the entertainment for the two days of the show, which included your favorite Kurfew drag queens, Robin Byrd, Jimmy James, The Gay Rapper, and a slew of other established and up-and-coming performers. Kurfew Jeff was interviewed on NY1 about the Expo, and members of the Kurfew Krew had the chance to meet the cast of the Showtime hit, Queer As Folk. Pictures are coming soon!

FASHION
SCHOOL
SHOWDOWN(tm)
2001

Undergraduate
student designers from Fashion Institute of Technology
battle those from Parson's School of Design in
the quest to be named the "Best Design School of 2001" and the "Best
Student Designer of 2001." It's the nighttime afterparty for the schools'
popular Fusion 2001 event (fusionfashionshow.com).
Nearly 20 student models from each school participate....and then it's time
to mix and mingle with the Kurfew Krowd! Kurfew's drag queen hostesses will
select the best designers and the best school overall based on style, creativity,
and audience reaction!
REPORT: It took a while
to get the huge turnout into the building, but the March 10th, 2001 Fashion
School Showdown between design students of FIT and Parsons was most definitely
a hit! Our drag queen/club kid judging panel is reviewing video and photographs
to select both the winning school and the winning designer. The awards cermony
will be held at Kurfew on March 24th!

Report:
The Kurfew Kids had quite a bit of fun on March 3rd as Kurfew helped Simon
& Schuster launch Kenny Scharf's new illustrated "Haiku! Gesundheit"
book! Kenny
Scharf, of course, is the acclaimed pop surrealist who created Kurfew's furry
"Cosmic Cavern." We held a Haiku Contest, both online and at the
club (check back here to see some winning entries!) and authors of particularly
Haikus were awarded Haiku! Gesundheit books with a special Kurfew event
inscription and autograph by Kenny Scharf himself!
We also celebrated the birthdays of Tom (Rodan), Tim and Kurfew Jeff. Many
thanks to Randy for the operatic birthday sing-a-long. Tim described the party
as "the best birthday I ever had!" and Tom called it "my best
birthday party ever." Thanks to all the "Kurfers" who made
it such a special night!

Report:
The New York boys partied on February 10th, while the San Francisco Kurfew boys
had their first taste of Kurfew on Sunday, February 11th following the San Francisco
Gay and Lesbian Expo! Besides attracting some of San Francsico's cutest guys
(and girls!) what was most remarkable about the San Francisco event was the
positive vibe and friendly, fun-loving spirit that has made Kurfew New York
so successful! The TranceFormers gave an incredible performance, and Kurfew's
DJ Ian Carisi kept the dance floor moving. Pictures from our first San Francisco
event are coming soon!

February 24th, 2001
Report:
February 24th drew a colorful crowd for Boy George's new mix CD release party!
Ms. Cookie Buffet was our special guest from Washington D.C. and took some time
to entertain the crowd waiting in line with her witty wisecracks. Cookie's light-up
hairdo was a statue-of-liberty-esq. reminder to the boys and girls in line of
the freedom that lay only a few steps inside!

February 3rd, 2001
Report:
February 3rd was the launch party for Head Over Heels! We gave away lots of
neat prizes from Universal Pictures including automated, light-up mirrors (every
model needs one of those!) and nifty Head Over Heels T-shirts.

"Nico and Dani" receives
a
"Top
Kurfew Film Recommendation!"
Report:
January 27th proved to be quite a fun
night as we celebrated the launch of the amazing new film, "Nico and Dani."
Lots of "Old School" Kurfews were in attendance, including Ms. Peppermint
Gummybear (right), Zach, Ricardo, as well as the #1 and #2 winners of Kurfew's
1998 Cutest Cover Boy contest...and they still are adorable!

It's
the "Kurfew Door Person" election and your vote counts...but this
time you'd better get it right! The only dimpled Chads in this election will
be the cute ones on the dance floor. PLUS A SURPRISE
SCHARF ROOM PERFORMANCE!
Report:
The performances on January 20th brought cheers and even active participants,
but the night also had its fair share of controversy (particularly James' "Fag
Show," with its underwear-clad boys). But nobody debated the merits of
J-Rock's solid performance (left). Meanwhile, prospective Kurfew door boys and
girls were working the crowd like seasoned candidates!

the "Vaginally-Challenged" Brittany Lynn (right) as hostess!
Win
prizes from the premiere gay phone chat service, meet some of the Gay Live New
York models and maybe even get selected to be a future Gay Live New York model!!!

Plus...a
special performance tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr.
Report:
January 13th brought not only an incredibly large crowd, but a really diverse
and fun mix of people and personalities from around the country. The "Vaginally-
Challenged" Brittany Lynn (Shampoo, Philadelphia), hosted the "Gay
Live New York" party, handing out hundreds of dollars of Gay Live giveaways.
Ms. Cookie Buffet (Velvet Nation, Washington DC) was our honorary door queen
for part of the night, and kept a party going on outside while the party went
on inside! Finally, Brittany, Cookie, J-Rock, Triniti and Electra all gave extraordinary
performances to make for quite an exciting night!
Saturday,
January 6th, 2001
Report:
We kicked off the Kurfew of the 21st Century on January 6th with a line that
snaked down the block and a really fun mix of old and new Kurfew boys and girls!
Ms. Electra (top) is seen here doing the Spice Girl giveaways by using
(what
else?) her mouth. Many old-time Kurfers remembered BeBe (right), born at Kurfew
nearly three years ago and now a star nightlife attraction in New York City
and beyond. Overall, we'd sum up the night by quoting a cute South African boy
visiting Kurfew on vacation: "This is just so fun!"
